I am a recent MA Arts graduate and current PhD candidate specializing in sustainable and design technology. My practice combines beading, weaving techniques, and costume pattern making, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. My master’s research explored bamboo in fashion and textiles, developing eco-conscious solutions that integrate Iban Marik Empang beading traditions with contemporary creativity.
我為近年取得藝術碩士(MA)學位的畢業生,並現為博士候選人,研究專長聚焦於永續設計與設計科技。我的創作實踐結合串珠、編織技法與服裝版型製作,將傳統工藝與當代設計語彙相融合。碩士研究期間,我以竹材於時尚與紡織中的應用為主題,發展具生態意識的設計解方,並將伊班族(Iban)Marik Empang 串珠傳統融入當代創意之中。
/Description and concept of the artwork
作品描述與概念/
The costume designs reimagine the Iban Marik Empang by integrating colours and cultural motifs with sustainable materials. The colours black (adlay) symbolizing power and authority, red (red beans) representing blood, vitality, bravery, and protection, and yellow (raw bamboo) signifying light, prosperity, and good fortune, form the cultural foundation of the designs. Traditional motifs deepen this symbolism where long beads represent longevity, round beads signify fertility, diamond reflect rice fields and fertility, and zigzag symbolize unity and bamboo shoots, though some original meanings have faded with modernization. The beading materials include copper wire for structure and adjustability, cotton and nylon threads for flexibility and movement. The male costume features a vest and waistband with a structured silhouette, while the female costume offers a contemporary form with chest beadwork inspired by the traditional beaded collar and a waistband skirt. Together, they express the resilience and evolving identity of Iban heritage.
本系列服裝設計透過永續材質,重新詮釋伊班族的 Marik Empang,並結合色彩與文化符號進行當代表達。
色彩意涵構成設計的文化基礎:
黑色(薏仁/adlay)象徵力量與權威;
紅色(紅豆)代表血液、生命力、勇氣與守護;
黃色(原竹)象徵光明、繁榮與好運。
傳統圖紋進一步深化象徵層次:長形珠代表長壽,圓珠象徵生育力,菱形呼應稻田與繁衍,鋸齒形象徵團結與竹筍——儘管部分原始意涵在現代化過程中逐漸淡化。串珠材質運用銅線作為結構與可調整性支撐,並以棉線與尼龍線提供柔韌性與動態表現。
男性服裝包含背心與腰帶,呈現結構清晰的輪廓;女性服裝則以當代造型回應傳統,胸前串珠設計取材自傳統串珠領飾,並搭配腰裙。兩者共同展現伊班文化的韌性與持續演變的身份認同。
