Patients with Alzheimer’s disease often find themselves in a state of impaired expression. When the ability to speak is lost, unspoken words seem to linger within their eyes. During a visit to a senior care community, the designer noticed an elderly man repeatedly tapping his fingers lightly on a tabletop, the rhythm closely resembling that of Morse code. This subtle observation became the source of inspiration.

The dots and dashes of Morse code echo the synaptic connections between neurons, symbolizing how patients’ cognitive pathways gradually become blurred. At the same time, Morse code introduces a ritual of “decoding” into acts of care and attention. Words such as “home,” “it’s my mother,” “don’t wander off,” “don’t leave,” “who am I,” and even “I am an Alzheimer’s patient” were translated into Morse code and embedded into the design.

Through textured surfaces of raised and recessed forms, warmth and emotional resonance are conveyed, allowing jewelry to become a medium through which silent individuals communicate with the world. The process of deciphering these codes also enables the public to perceive and understand the voices of the Alzheimer’s community—voices blurred by time yet still present.

The work further employs treated metals with gradations from dark to light, and circular grooves that shift from shallow to deep, metaphorically referencing the memory curve of Alzheimer’s patients. Rings made from different materials and finishes express varied visual and tactile effects, reinforcing the theme while also highlighting individual differences.

The title of the work, “Sequential Erosion,” reflects this concept. “Sequential” refers directly to the order of memory, while “Erosion” signifies both the gradual erosion of memory caused by the disease and the transformation of metal textures through specialized processes. The use of new materials symbolizes resistance against memory loss and the enduring effort to preserve identity in the face of forgetting.
