Owen Mapp (CNZM)Aotearoa New Zealand is a professional carver based on the Kapiti Coast since 1968 with links to NZ. Bone carving symposium annually held in Mokau, Taranaki.

Owen's roles include: artist, specialist carving tutor, mentor, consultant and ambassador for New Zealand bone carving.

"My practice of Aotearoa bone carving revitalised the materials and hand techniques in the 1960s - 1970s."

Tikanga meaning in Mãori 'the way of doing things' was passed onto Owen and influenced by Ngãti Porou leaders, (kaumatua) while he developed his own style and designs. The cultural histories have been a sustainable source of inspiration for Owen's carved works and new commissions for over 5 decades now.

Perspectives on Tradition and Future, Sustainability and Fashion, and Life.

Former graduates of the Whitireia NZ degree programme in craft design studies are now mentors and a credit to Owen's sustainable practice linked to history throughout Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Battle Hill Forest Park, Pukerua Bay, is the location of our 2024 collaborative fashion photoshoot of textiles, bone carved jewellery and accessories inspired by natural dyed animal fibres.

Battle Hill is a significant historical site of New Zealand Land wars in as the last Wellington region battle during the 1840s. Now a recreational park and farm.

Owen regularly visited this site of pre European and Maori relationships to teach students the origins of local cultural history. Battle Hill, selected by photographer Destina Munro, was an appropriate location to remember the past and experience the environment which has been preserved with buildings refurbished for schools, clubs, groups and communities to use by the Wellington Regional Council.

Battle Hill
