Perspectives on Tradition and Future, Sustainability and Fashion, and Life.

Fashion is a way of being trendy based on a specific period, place and context; it is a way of self-expression and cultural construction. The fashionable and the sustainable, the traditional and the futuristic, can be juxtaposed through design strategies, materials and processes; they are not contradictory.

What is in conflict is sustainability and the current social form of consumption alienation. It is a long way off to achieve truly sustainable, which requires both awakening and physical practice.

The Concept and Description of the Work

Year in and Year out was inspired by a story told by my grandfather about how he and his four brothers were characterised and sheltered by a tweed coat. This work therefore utilises the structural features and details of the coat as visual symbols, and uses buttons and clothing accessories that my grandfather collected that fell off and were not sewn in time. Whilst retaining their function, these found objects attempt to re-narrativise by creating new contexts and visual images.

《Year in and Year out》的靈感來自於我祖父講述的一個故事,故事中他和他的四個兄弟是如何被一件粗花呢外套所描繪和庇護。
