Perspectives on Tradition and Future, Sustainability and Fashion, and Life.

The concept of multilayered time folds fascinates me, superimposing the past, present and future. My view of sustainability is tangled in this vision. As tradition, and cultural heritage, inform the present, the flux of our actions in the present will be reflected in the future. I think to truly live a sustainable life, we need to consider where our daily practice fits into global systems, and make small gestures, to practise an artful life. In brief, consume less, produce what lasts, and fashion so differently that it will outlive an era. Connected with nature, and think responsibility about the origin and process that brings raw materials into our hands.

The Concept and Description of the Work關於參展作品的創作動機與設計理念

Transformative potential of matter attracts me. The selection of which molecular assemblages are connected to my personal environment is a curious process. Through my work, I consider the traces of trade routes, displacement of materials, of colonialism, consumerism, the emptied out remains, the shells of things that once contained life. Memories of territories, of organic and inorganic entities, imbedded with traces of time, decaying fragments of the past that continue to inform my future.

The pathways of materials from post human use fascinates and unsettles me. I use single-use items, teabags creating lines that map their trajectory across a shape resembling South Africa, a critical point in transit from the east to the west. Within the teabags are discarded shells of pistachios, an organic element, but also a strong symbol in certain cultures. I am reflecting on the undercurrents that shift materials across the globe.
